Latin American Women, Children at Risk

Within Latin America - Nicaragua

Latin American women and children of all races survive in a hostile social climate of severe sexual harassment and sexual violence.  These conditions expose women and especially girl children to danger in the home, in their communities, in their schools and in their workplaces.

The below articles & reports define the scope of this ongoing crisis.

Concerned Activists Work to End Exploitation and Impunity

Save the Children, journalists and educators in Nicaragua have joined together to create a child, youth and adult friendly bilingual web site to combat the abuse of children.  Angel de la Guarda (Guardian Angel) presents a variety of articles discussing these important issues.

We at LibertadLatina applaud your important efforts.  Keep up the great work!

Thanks to Gonzalo Saramiento, Executive Director of www.LatinoAmericanosDesaparacidos.org (Disappeared Latin Americans)... for bringing Angel de la Guarda to our attention!

Good luck to all of you in your important work, made stronger today by the addition of Nicaragua's first missing persons web site: www.nicaraguensesdesaparecidos.org

Best wishes!

TESTIMONY: Voices against Violence

In the forums, these girls raise their voices against violence. They're part of an amateur theater group that acts out a social drama against abuse and domestic violence. These are the number one causes of the commercial sexual exploitation of adolescents.

2002 Articles

"1.7 Million Hungry People in Nicaragua"

Child Slavery in Nicaragua

More than three thousand Nicaraguan boys, girls and adolescents begin working at a very young age to pay off parental debt. This places them in a highly vulnerable situation, and practically makes them victims of servitude.

Impunity for Sexual Crimes against Children

  • The reformed Penal Code does not specify nor punish the commercial sexual abuse of minors
  • The NGO "Dos Generaciones" and the NGO Coalition for the Rights of Children submit a proposal to fill the shameful legal gap

"There is sexual tourism, but it's in the early stages"

Reyna Velazquez, assistant director of the NGO "Dos Generaciones" (Two Generations), believes the Penal Code needs urgent reform, because the present legal framework is much too weak to confront and punish the crimes related to the commercial sexual exploitation of children.

"Sexual offenders should be punished"

  • The Penal Code should specify crimes and punishment for adults who promote child pornography and prostitution.

Nicaragua suffers from a legal chasm to deal with the problem of commercial sexual exploitation of children. In general reforms to the Penal Code, approved last year, no crimes in this area were specified. There was no mention of the production and sale of child pornography or the promotion of sexual tourism involving minors.
